Oyez! The trip to Kiptopeke/Cape Charles on the lovely eastern shore of VA is upon us. In case you don't know/can't remember, it's very near the southernmost tip of Delmarva, near the scenic Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (http://www.cbbt.com/). The date is floating somewhat. For those who would like to spend two nights sleeping under the stars, there are some who are interested in going Friday evening (10/11/2002). There are a few whose schedules won't allow it, so they'll be traveling Saturday morning (10/12). If you have more free time, Mickey has proposed sailing there starting Thursday. Sailing provides a pretty relaxing way of watching migrating birds overhead during the day, as well. Although I think most of the ospreys overwinter, you'll be able to see them up close. What is agreed, so far, is that we'll be returning Sunday evening around 7 pm, or whenever traffic or other unforeseen circumstances will allow. We won't be staying the full three days of the Columbus Day weekend because too many people cannot stay that long. Oh, those who wish to sail should allow for another two days on either end for travel. It's a long way from Annapolis to Cape Charles. Mickey can fill you in on those details. The rest of us who are not sailing can travel separately or pool up; you can use me as an intermediary for those plans also, if you prefer. The purpose of the trip is ostensibly for hawk/songbird migration: Cape Charles is near the Atlantic Flyway, birds along this route travel as far as South America for the winter. Cape Charles/Kiptopeke a major stopping point/'landmark' for all sorts of birds this time of year as they head towards warmer climes (http://www.birdnature.com/flyways.html). We'll be staying, the majority of us, in Kiptopeke State Park (http://www.dcr.state.va.us/parks/kiptopek.htm). Nat today is supposed to be looking into reservations. For those who were not there last year, it's a pretty comfy campground with plenty of facilities for those opposed to being too 'au naturel' for a few days. The other option is a motel very, very nearby - I think it's a Budget Inn, but I'm not too sure. Spiegler will definitely be there and would appreciate anyone who wants to join him. Extra equipment is available for those who need it. Just let me know what you need by Wednesday, and I'll have the appropriate parties get into contact with you. Specifically to Dino: If you're going, bring an alternative to your hammock. If I remember correctly, the trees (big pine trees) are rather large in diameter and are relatively widely-spaced. In other words, you may not have a good place to 'hang.' More information to be found tomorrow evening at: http://www.slowresponseteam.com/destinations/kiptopeke/ I have a small archive of information used last year for the trip. Other questions/comments? Please refer them to me over the phone () or reply to this e-mail. Other information: http://residentassociates.org/rap/tour-sep/fall-bird.asp Quiz: http://www.hawkmountain.org/raptorid/idquiz.html (I got a miserable 65%, but those pictures suck) If you find better sites, send them to me. I'll use them for info on our Slow Response Team site. Apologies for any mistakes. I did kinda write this in a hodgepodge manner and may have missed important info or people. Please feel free to forward this to other interested parties. All interested in going, please RSVP me by Wednesday at this e-mail or the provided phone number. tjd -- tjd The Slow Response Team We'll reply...eventually http://www.slowresponseteam.com/ From: To: <@starpower.net>; "Princess" <@starpower.net>; "Nat Van Winkle" <@hotmail.com>; "Mickey" <@verio.net>; "Barf" <@aol.com>; "Katie" <@aol.com>; "Dino" <@gwu.edu>; "Michael" <@abcbirds.org> Sent: Thursday, October 10, 2002 5:21 PM Subject: Final call? Kiptopeke Nat says she has secured a reservation for a campsite in Kiptopeke State Park. Because unfortunately Spiegler isn't going, no motel reservations were made. More information will hopefully be available on where we'll be and other junk at: http://www.slowresponseteam.com/destinations/kiptopeke/ sometime later tonight or tomorrow morning. For those going Friday night: let's coordinate what time we'll be able to meet and leave to get down there. I believe the earliest time we can meet to go is 8, since Nat expects to be home from work then. If you so desire to leave before her, get from her the campsite info and we'll see you down there! Those going Saturday or Sunday, there's not a whole lot I can say except come and find us. We don't have the site number I don't think, but it's not all that huge a camp area, and you should be able to spot us. Are we making dinner/breakfasts, etc? If so, let's come up with some sort of a list of things to get. We're camping comfy, so if y'all want steaks or whatever, let me know and I can get tomorrow. Uh, for those of you...uh...non-meat eaters, let me know what sort of thing would be an acceptable substitute. You can also get your own stuff - what I was thinking of doing is getting some vegetables and prepping them, and getting some steaks or whatever we can agree on and stickin' 'em into a cooler. I have also heard that breakfast at the site is also a desired item. We can do it, just lemme know what stuff you'd like. Anything else? I know I'm forgetting something. tjd -- tjd The Slow Response Team We'll reply...eventually http://www.slowresponseteam.com/
